The Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal (HPA) axis
This system helps the body respond to stress by releasing hormones such as cortisol.
The Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Gonadal (HPG) axis
This system regulates reproductive hormones involved in pregnancy and development.
When these systems function in balance, the body can adapt effectively to the many changes that occur during pregnancy.
Stress and Pregnancy

When stress occurs, the body activates the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the body’s response to challenges.
This system includes two branches:
Sympathetic nervous system

Understanding Heart Rate Variability
One way researchers study nervous system adaptability is through heart rate variability (HRV).
HRV measures small changes in the timing between heartbeats. These variations reflect how effectively the nervous system adapts to stress and recovery.
Higher variability generally indicates greater flexibility in the nervous system’s ability to respond to changing demands.
HRV has been widely studied as a marker of autonomic nervous system function and stress regulation.
Nervous System Assessments in Chiropractic Care
Some chiropractors use non-invasive assessments to observe patterns of nervous system activity.
One example is INSiGHT scanning technology, which includes several types of measurements designed to observe physiological responses related to stress and nervous system function.
