What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
What to Expect at Your Visit
If you've never been to a chiropractor before, it's completely normal to have questions.
What exactly is an adjustment? Does it hurt? Is the "cracking" sound necessary? And what actually happens during an appointment?
At Restore Studio, we believe understanding your care is just as important as receiving it. This guide explains what a chiropractic adjustment is, what you can expect during your visit, and how chiropractic care fits within a broader approach to health and wellbeing.
What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a manual technique performed by a registered chiropractor to help improve the movement of a joint.
Depending on the person and the area being assessed, an adjustment may involve:
a gentle manual contact
a quick, controlled movement to a joint
a low-force instrument-assisted technique
soft tissue techniques
movement-based approaches
Not every adjustment involves a "crack" or popping sound, and different techniques are appropriate for different people, ages and health histories.
Is an Adjustment the Same for Everyone?
No. A thorough chiropractic assessment should always come before any treatment. At Restore Studio, we consider factors such as:
your health history
current symptoms
previous injuries
age
movement and posture
your goals for care
For babies, children, pregnant women and older adults, techniques are modified to suit the individual. Care is always tailored to the person in front of us rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
What Does an Adjustment Feel Like?
Experiences vary from person to person. Many people describe an adjustment as feeling like:
gentle pressure
a quick movement
a sense of release
improved ease of movement afterwards
Some people notice mild soreness for a day or two following treatment, similar to how muscles can feel after starting a new exercise program. This is generally temporary.
What Causes the "Cracking" Sound?
One of the most common questions we hear is:
"What was that popping noise?"
The sound is called joint cavitation.
It occurs when pressure changes within the joint cause gas bubbles in the joint fluid to release.
It is not bones grinding together or moving back into place. Some adjustments produce this sound, while many do not. The presence or absence of a "crack" does not determine whether an adjustment has been effective.
What Happens During Your First Visit?
Your first appointment is focused on understanding you.
This may include:
discussing your health history
talking about your concerns and goals
a physical assessment
movement and posture assessment
determining whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you
If chiropractic care is not suitable, your chiropractor may recommend that you seek assessment from another healthcare provider.
Our Approach at Restore Studio
At Restore Studio, our goal is to understand how your body is functioning as a whole.
Alongside your clinical assessment, we may use non-invasive technologies such as INSiGHT scans to observe patterns related to:
muscle activity
posture
physiological stress responses
These assessments provide additional information to help guide care.
Importantly, they do not diagnose medical conditions, they do not diagnose neurological disorders, they do not replace medical investigations or imaging when these are indicated.
Chiropractic Care as Part of Your Healthcare Team
Chiropractic care is one part of a broader healthcare approach.
Many people choose chiropractic alongside care from:
their GP
physiotherapist
obstetrician
paediatrician
psychologist
exercise physiologist
other allied health professionals
Working collaboratively helps ensure people receive the care most appropriate for their individual needs.
What Can Chiropractic Care Help With?
In Australia, chiropractors are registered primary healthcare practitioners who assess and manage musculoskeletal conditions within their scope of practice.
People commonly seek chiropractic care for concerns such as:
back pain
neck pain
headaches that may have a musculoskeletal component
joint stiffness
movement restrictions
Some people also choose chiropractic care as part of their broader wellbeing routine.
Responses to care vary between individuals, and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.
What About Babies and Children?
Parents are often surprised to learn that chiropractic care for infants and children looks very different from adult care.
When appropriate, techniques used with babies involve extremely light pressure that is adapted to their age, size and stage of development.
At Restore Studio, every child receives an individual assessment, and care is only recommended where clinically appropriate.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe?
When provided by a registered chiropractor following an appropriate clinical assessment, chiropractic care is considered safe for many people.
Like all healthcare, chiropractic care has potential benefits and risks, and not every technique is suitable for every person.
Your chiropractor should explain:
why care is being recommended
what to expect
possible risks and benefits
alternative options where appropriate
If treatment is not appropriate, referral to another healthcare provider may be recommended.
A Whole-Person Approach
At Restore Studio, we don't believe health is about one appointment or one adjustment.
We believe wellbeing is supported through many interconnected factors, including:
movement
sleep
physical comfort
nutrition
stress management
meaningful relationships
appropriate healthcare
Chiropractic care can form one part of that bigger picture.
