Why Do I Get Overstimulated So Easily?
Understanding sensory overload, stress and your nervous system
Have you ever reached the end of the day and felt like everything is suddenly too much?
The noise. The questions. Someone touching you. The TV in the background. Another notification. Even deciding what to have for dinner can feel like one thing too many.
For some people, this feeling happens occasionally. For others, becoming overstimulated can feel like a regular part of everyday life.
Overstimulation isn't necessarily a sign that something is wrong. It can be a useful signal that your brain and body are processing more information than feels manageable in that moment.
Understanding what's happening can help you recognise your patterns and find practical ways to support yourself.
What is overstimulation?
Our brains are constantly receiving information from the world around us.
Sounds, lights, smells, movement, touch, temperature, conversations and what's happening inside our own bodies are all being processed at once.
Most of the time, the brain is able to filter and prioritise this information without us consciously thinking about it.
But sometimes, the amount or intensity of sensory information can become overwhelming.
You might notice:
feeling irritated by sounds that normally wouldn't bother you
wanting everyone to stop talking or touching you
becoming more emotional or short-tempered
struggling to concentrate or make decisions
feeling restless or needing to escape
becoming unusually sensitive to light, noise or touch
feeling mentally and physically exhausted
wanting quiet, space or time alone.
The experience can look different for everyone.
Why do I get overstimulated so easily?
There's rarely one simple explanation.
Your capacity to process what's happening around you can change depending on your environment, physical health, emotional state and what's already happened throughout your day.
Think about your capacity like a cup.
A busy morning might add a little. Poor sleep adds some more. Work deadlines, parenting demands, traffic, constant notifications, noise and a skipped lunch can keep filling it.
Then something seemingly small happens — the kids start arguing, someone asks another question or the supermarket feels particularly loud — and suddenly your cup is overflowing.
It wasn't necessarily that final moment that caused everything.
It was everything your system was already managing beforehand.
The nervous system + stress
Your nervous system plays an important role in how your body responds to what's happening around you.
The autonomic nervous system helps regulate many automatic functions in the body and includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
At Restore, we sometimes explain these using a simple analogy:
Sympathetic nervous system = the gas pedal
It helps prepare the body for activity and respond to challenge.
Parasympathetic nervous system = the brake pedal
It supports functions associated with rest, digestion and recovery.
Both are important.
The goal isn't to stay permanently calm or in “rest and digest”. A healthy nervous system needs to respond when demands increase and settle again when those demands pass.
Why stress can change your capacity
You've probably noticed that you're more easily overwhelmed when you're tired, hungry, busy or already stressed.
That's because sensory processing doesn't happen separately from everything else going on in your body and environment.
When there are already lots of demands competing for your attention, additional sensory input can become harder to manage.
This is why the same noisy café might feel completely fine one day and unbearable the next.
Your environment hasn't necessarily changed.
Your available capacity has.
Overstimulation can look different for adults
For adults — and particularly busy parents — overstimulation doesn't always look like covering your ears or needing to leave a noisy room.
It might look like:
“I just need everyone to stop talking to me.”
Feeling touched-out after a day with young children.
Becoming unusually frustrated by background noise.
Needing silence in the car after work.
Feeling like you can't answer another question.
Struggling to make even simple decisions by the end of the day.
Finding yourself snapping at people you love when you actually just feel overwhelmed.
Sometimes recognising these moments for what they are can help you respond differently.
What can help when you're feeling overstimulated?
There isn't one nervous-system “hack” that works for everyone.
Often, simple strategies can help reduce the amount of input you're processing and give yourself some space to recover.
You might try:
stepping outside or moving somewhere quieter
reducing unnecessary background noise
putting your phone away for a while
taking a walk or gently moving your body
eating regularly and staying hydrated
protecting your sleep where possible
taking a few slow, comfortable breaths
creating small pockets of quiet throughout your day
communicating when you need some space
simplifying your environment or expectations when your capacity is already low.
The aim isn't to avoid stimulation altogether. It's to become more aware of what increases your load and what helps you feel more settled afterwards.
What about the vagus nerve?
You may have seen the vagus nerve discussed online in relation to stress, overwhelm and regulation.
The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and an important component of the parasympathetic nervous system. It travels from the brainstem through the neck and into the chest and abdomen, contributing to communication between the brain and several organs.
It plays a role in functions including heart rate and digestion.
While the vagus nerve is an important part of autonomic physiology, overstimulation shouldn't automatically be interpreted as evidence of “vagus nerve dysfunction”.
Stress responses and sensory processing are complex and involve many areas of the brain and body.
Is overstimulation the same as nervous system dysregulation?
Not necessarily.
“Nervous system dysregulation” is commonly used in wellbeing conversations to describe difficulty moving between different states of alertness, activity and rest.
Feeling overstimulated occasionally doesn't mean you have a nervous system disorder or dysautonomia.
Overstimulation can also be experienced alongside anxiety, chronic stress, neurodevelopmental differences, sensory processing differences and other physical or psychological factors.
If it's happening frequently or significantly interfering with everyday life, appropriate professional assessment can help identify what might be contributing.
Where does chiropractic fit?
At Restore, chiropractic care isn't a treatment for overstimulation, anxiety, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, autism or dysautonomia.
Our chiropractors assess the neuromusculoskeletal system, considering factors such as joint movement, muscle function and other relevant physical findings.
Because the musculoskeletal and nervous systems interact, we may also discuss movement, sensory input, physical tension and the demands being placed on your body.
Where chiropractic care is clinically appropriate, recommendations are based on your individual history, examination and assessment findings.
We don't describe chiropractic adjustments as “resetting” your nervous system or switching off your stress response.
What about INSiGHT Scans?
At Restore, INSiGHT technology may be used to provide additional neuromuscular and physiological information as part of a broader chiropractic assessment.
Depending on what's clinically appropriate, this may include:
Surface EMG — measures electrical activity associated with muscles.
Thermal scanning — measures differences in skin temperature along the spine.
Heart rate variability (HRV) — measures variation in the timing between heartbeats and can provide information related to autonomic activity.
These scans don't diagnose overstimulation, anxiety, sensory processing conditions, dysautonomia or “nervous system dysregulation”.
They're considered alongside your history, clinical examination and other relevant information.
Understanding your own capacity
Becoming easily overstimulated doesn't necessarily mean your nervous system is broken or that you need to become better at “staying calm”.
Sometimes it's simply a sign that your current demands are greater than your available capacity.
Instead of asking:
“Why can't I handle this?”
It can be more useful to consider:
How much am I already carrying today?
What tends to increase my load?
What helps me feel more settled?
Do I need movement, food, rest, quiet or connection?
Is this becoming frequent enough that I should seek additional support?
Understanding those patterns can help you make practical changes and recognise when you may need support.
Supporting the whole person at Restore
